Josef Bayer *1950 is a German linguist and professor emeritus at the University of Konstanz, where he held the chair for general linguistics and German linguistics from 2000 to 2016. His research focus is syntax including its role in human language processing. After his habilitation in theoretical linguistics in Konstanz, Bayer held visiting professorships in Düsseldorf and Vienna before he was appointed professor for general and German linguistics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, where he worked from 1994 to 2000. For several years, he has been invited to the University of Verona as a visiting professor. Bayer’s linguistic work is essentially assigned to generative grammar. With the article Comp in Bavarian Syntax from 1984, dialect syntax was integrated into a formal and comparative research framework for the first time. A language focus in Bayer’s work is Bengali (a.k.a Bangla), s. publications on word order, questions and modal particles – Bayer (1996), Bayer & Cheng (2017), Bayer & Dasgupta (2016). Since the 1990s, the study of focus and modal particles has become central in his work. Bayer also examined the importance of linguistic and psycholinguistic models for the theory of human language processing in papers on aphasic disorders and in experimental papers on language comprehension w.r.t. case.

So far, Bayer edited 8 volumes, (co)authored 2 monographs and roughly 120 articles.
