+Comment by Nhim Sotheavin, Sophia University | Abstract | DCMA has practically conducted the conservation and restoration works in Angkor. In every restoration site, preventive archaeological excavation has to be implemented beforehand. Various kinds of ceramics, which fully contain sediments, have been unearthed nearby the ancient temples’ foundation. The sediments inside the ceramics have partly remained the human born and ashes. This is not the first finding on the studied question, but it was revealed by Barnard Phillippe Groslier in the 1960s in the excavation project at Srah Srang, and the excavation project in 1996-97 and 2019 conducted by the Sophia University at the Banteay Kdei.
This talk will first introduce the archaeological excavation in the Angkor Wat compound and archaeological survey on some burial sites in Angkor, and then highlight the study on the Living Tradition of Angkorian villagers who have continuously practised their bury ashes following their ancestor’s culture.
