85 site bore witness to the fact that gold leaf and gold paint gleamed on the upper section of the central tower of Angkor Wat. In the case of the Angkor dynasty, as the discovery of the archaeological sites was delayed (1863), the dynasty also appeared later in the history of both Asia and the world, and one may say it was the last known great dynasty. Regarding the history of the world’s civilizations, it is often said, “Do not speak of history without knowing Rome.” In the Asian world though, I would like people to speak of a world history and Asian history, that incorporate the history of the Angkor dynasty. Regarding the collapse of the Angkor dynasty too, a fresh analysis is called for. The EFEO has so far explained the collapse of the Angkor dynasty by the temple building fatigue theory. Yet in 2001 and 2010, by excavating 280 abandoned Buddhist statues from below the earth, the Sophia University Angkor International Mission clarified the historical fact that even at the end of the dynasty, the king’s power extended to far-away regions. The several heroic wars that were fought with the early Ayutthaya army at the end of the dynasty, are not cited in the records. However, in the “Ayutthaya Dynasty Chronicles,” it is recorded that they were forced back once by the strongly resisting Angkor army, on the second occasion they attacked after asking for reinforcements, and finally they brought about the downfall of the castle. That was the level of defiance by the robust Angkor army. It was a decisive war in continental Southeast Asia, and hence fatigue over temple building was not the cause of the downfall of the dynasty. Knowing more about the Angkor Monuments My desire was to clarify and convey the history of Angkor Wat in a language that is simple and easy to understand. We believe the outcome of such research and scholarship should always be restored to the general public and local Cambodian people.
