60 restoration of the Cambodian archaeological sites, an activity carried out “by the Cambodians, for the Cambodians.” A training center was erected at the local site, and training of human resources was initiated at the restoration site in Angkor Wat. The conservation and restoration of the Angkor monuments and human resource development activities that have been carried out over the past 30 years, provided an opportunity for reconciliation between the Cambodians, after the restoration of peace in 1993. That led to cultural revival, it became an occasion for them to regain pride in their cultural heritage, and eventually it led to the realization of peacebuilding. The achievements and results of the Sophia University Angkor International Mission over these many years were highly acclaimed by the Magsaysay Foundation, and eventually led to their bestowing of the award.
