In 1963 while at graduate school I got married, and my wife hailed from Yuni city in the subprefecture of Sorachi. My wife and my younger sister happened to be classmates at Tenshi Junior College (now Tenshi University) in Sapporo, and we met at my sister’s wedding. Yet when I applied for a metropolitan housing residence, our new life began with remarks such as, “you certainly live well with such a small income.” Later on while still enrolled at graduate school, realizing that I had to bear in mind the wishes of my parents as well, I returned briefly to Obihiro to teach English and French at Obihiro Otani Gakuen High School and Junior College. Yet, I found myself unable to tear myself away from research on Angkor Wat. Accordingly, I sat for the examination of the Japanese Ministry of Education for International Students who are to be dispatched to Asia, and passed. However on March 9, 1970, when I was on the verge of heading for Cambodia, a coup d'état occurred within that nation. I had planned on boarding the plane at Haneda airport in Tokyo, but as the plane was unable to land at Phnom Penh, I returned to Obihiro in tears.
