125 had collected water from the Siem Reap River and investigated the degree of water pollution. Dr. Lao was a steady individual, and out of his concern for the ecological decline he collected and preserved data in advance, and predicted the environmental crisis of the Angkor monuments. He first translated all texts related to “ISO 14001” into Cambodian. He was always present for village parleys, where he keenly explained the urgency involved, in easily understandable Cambodian. Moving around village halls, schools, temples, and hamlets, he stressed the cruciality of the issue, and reacted politely to questions. Dr. Lao lived in the area for about three years, moving about the villages and striving hard. Without the aid of a Cambodian like Dr. Lao, we would have been unable to obtain the “ISO 14001.” After retirement Dr. Lao shifted his residence to Cambodia, and is currently aiding the restoration work at the western approach of Angkor Wat as a researcher of Sophia University. In view of that I wish to express my sincere gratitude to him for having striven so hard behind the scenes to obtain the certification for us, and I would like also to express my admiration for the love that he has for his country.
