ANGKOR and I

97 Did they confront the transfixing sunrise and seek an unending world? I get the idea that I perhaps am the only person who has feelings like that. In the Angkor dynasty, a freshly enthroned God King had to erect anew a set of 3 edifices (a city, temple, and royal palace). As to building the new city and the other edifices, plans based on a traditional view of the cosmos were written on palm leaves. This was done for the city, for erecting buildings, and so on, and it is judged that a method was created to check the spelling. Also, the blueprints were perhaps made from large pieces of cowhide like that used in the current shadow play “Sbaek Thom,” which was rolled up like a scroll and brought to the scene. Yet, over the years they all vanished, but there are inscriptions suggesting such historical facts. Besides religion, art, farming tools, seeds and so on, over a long period dating back prior to the time of Christ, current radical technologies affiliated to astronomy, mathematics, and geometry were introduced into Cambodia from India, and it is said there also existed ways of calculation using trigonometry. It is said the building plans of Angkor Wat were compiled with close ties to astronomical and astrological issues, like the lunar calendar, the movement of heavenly bodies, the sun’s position on the equinoxes and solstices (the vernal and autumnal equinox and summer and winter solstice), and others. (F. G. Faut, Astoronomie Cambodgienne,1910). Through eras of skill in erecting temples and by repeated technological innovations, the people of that period amassed their expertise in advanced building techniques. The Foundational Work for the Establishment of Angkor Wat As a procedure for the establishment of the Angkor Wat temple, first the excavation of the moat began within the site. Currently the overall area of the moat of Angkor Wat is around 91 hectares, and to create this moat earth and sand were temporarily excavated to half its depth. Even if the earth and sand were all removed, it has been gauged that they are likely to amount to a quantity sufficient to fill Tokyo
