私は19世紀アメリカ史が専門ですが、南北戦争（1861年‐65年）前後のルイジアナ州におけるアフリカ系アメリカ人の草の根運動に焦点を当て研究をしています。アメリカでは、1865年の奴隷制廃止まで多くのアフリカ系アメリカ人が「奴隷」とされていました。私の研究は戦争後、彼らがどのように自分たちの「自由」を考え、アメリカの市民権に関する議論を牽引したかを考察するものです。その他、私は20世紀転換期にアメリカ南部に移住した日本人の足取りを史料から追ったり、デジタル技術の発展が歴史学研究にどのような影響を及ぼしているのか考察したりしています。

I study nineteenth-century U.S. history with an emphasis on African American communities in Louisiana during and after the Civil War. My research question centers around how African Americans defined “freedom” after emancipation and led civil rights debates in the late nineteenth-century United States. I also study about Japanese families who migrated to the American South at the turn of the twentieth century. I am also a digital history practitioner! I am interested in how digital technologies have transformed the ways in which we conduct historical research.

北米地域研究入門、African American Historyなどの地域研究系の科目やデジタル・ヒストリーを担当します。African American Historyではアメリカの歴史をアフリカ系アメリカ人の経験から考察します。Introduction to Digital Historyでは近年のデジタル・ヒューマニティーズの議論を参照しながら、デジタル技術が研究目的、史料保存、調査など、様々な分野でどういう影響を与えているのか批判的に考えます。どの講義でも受講生の主体的な参加を期待しています。また、１年生、2年生向けのEnglish Composition, English Skillsでは、日常生活の様々なテーマから英語で講義を取り、課題をこなすスキルを伸ばすための講義を行いたいと考えています。

I teach Introduction to North American Studies, African American History, and Introduction to Digital History. I also teach various English courses such as English Skills and English Composition to help first- and second-year students improve their academic English skills.
