The SAIMS program not only gave me the opportunity to go to Japan, it also allowed me to understand the other cultures and people more. The program and the set-up of the university itself as a place for many international students and professors to gather provided me the perfect venue not only for meeting new friends from other countries, but also for a genuine exchange of ideas and culture that further diversify and expand my point-of-view about a lot of topics and issues. Though I did not get to join other SAIMS students in Hokkaido for the RIVERS class last August, I still learned a lot about how theories and concepts from different fields can be applied to alleviate effects of societal and environmental problems – as is the focus of the core subject called “Introduction to Trans-Disciplinary Human Development” and through other courses offered in the program.
