My idea of studying abroad underwent a big change. I had never even thought about studying in Asia because I originally wanted to study in one of the Western countries to improve my English skills. After having studied in Indonesia, however, I can now realize that my experience in Indonesia had significant meanings and values for my life. There, I jumped into various activities, experienced a lot of things, and built relationships that I would never have had in Japan. What I gained through all this were friends that I would never have met otherwise, courage, and awareness of the kindness of people around me. I can now acknowledge and truly appreciate the love and support of my family and friends. I now think that no matter where you go, be it the United States or Indonesia, studying abroad can become more than just exciting, as once you step out of Japan, you are in a foreign country, surrounded by people of different cultures. Perhaps you might feel doubtful about studying abroad on the SAIMS program because there may be fewer people around you who have studied in ASEAN countries compared to Western countries. But I hope that many students will take part in the SAIMS program and get the best experience of life just like I did. It was a truly invaluable experience that I wish I could go back to Indonesia if I could apply to the program for the second time.
