Although it was only for one semester, I studied at Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia’s top ranked university in the field of economy. I was greatly stimulated to study along with local students who were ready and willing to drive the future development of Indonesian economy. There were many international students from Europe, too. European students had their own unique views on issues we took up in class and distinctive styles for living as an international student. So I had a chance to encounter diverse ways of thinking and values. Very few people (fewer than I had imagined) could understand English outside the university, so I needed to learn Indonesian for daily purposes, but this helped a lot in deepening my understanding on the people and culture of Indonesia. At first, I could not even make myself understood to the owner of the room I stayed in, which made me quite anxious about my life in Indonesia. I was even hospitalized with dengue fever. Through such unexpected experiences I was able to grow with a lot of support from many people. I was able to spend a very dense time there. While Indonesia and the other ASEAN countries are still not a major destination for studying abroad, studying for several months in an energetic Asian country undergoing rapid economic development and with a young population offers great excitement and fun to university students. In addition, commodity prices are much lower than in Japan and the climate is warm and comfortable (except that there’s a rainy season), making the country a nice place to live. Moreover, people in Indonesia generally have a good impression about Japan. They are so friendly that people you don’t know would come and talk to you on the streets. So, there’re no worries about finding a friend in Indonesia.
