The Shadowplay of Java, a Digital Philology of Performance, and Religious Worldmaking Date and time13/06/2013 12:40:02 Using a performance of the famous Javanese mystical shadowplay Dewa Ruci as an example, in this lecture I will discuss the philological study of performance. I will do this with reference to my book Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind: The Javanese Shadow-Play Dewa Ruci Performed by Ki Anom Soeroto: A Study in Performance Philology (NUS Press, 2016) and I will also introduce the next initiative, which is currently taking shape in collaboration with Dr. Miguel Escobar of the National University of Singapore, to transform and enrich the book format of Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind into an online digital multimedia format that facilitates other topics of inquiry and other methods of analysis. My focus will be on the creation of a religious ambience in performance and the ways this kind of religious worldmaking can be studied in print-based philology and digital multimedia philology.
