This discipline aims at conducting specialized research in communication, journalism and mass communications. From the traditional international viewpoint of Sophia University, emphasis is placed on theoritical and historical research, as well on an analysis of newspapers, broadcasting, magazines, publishing, the cinema, advertisements, new media and public relations. Based on the knowledge acquired in the master's program, the doctoral program aims at fostering capable researchers in this specialized field by studying intersively the theory of communication, the history of journalism, and the systems of mass media and new media.

A study of the latest precedents of American laws on newspapers in all ramifications. Course will be useful to both journalism and law students. Ethics and laws of the United States and Germany related to journalism are discussed.

This is a special course on the relation of the American form of government and mass media. We will study the basic policy of representative government, the features and functions of the freedom of speech, the historic conflicts between the recent governments and varions organs of expression.

This course will study basic techniques of survey and statistical tests.
/Fujita, Takahiro
This is special course on theoretical study of communication and media system. We will be discussing the relations between media-technology and Human behavior.
/Oto
Owing to recent technological innovations, the basic function of television is changing very rapidly. The course will focus on broadcasting by satellites and cable television.
/Ishikawa
This course will deal with some of the basic issues the U.S. media face in the 1990's and their relevancy to the media in Japan. The so-called "public journalism" or "civic journalism" which is practiced by some U.S. media today will be discussed as one of the major topics during the course of the study.
/Fujita
The Japanese press was liberated from the past restrictions at the end of the war and entered a new era. We will study these phenomena by using original materials.
