  • Our last World Cup hopes (4)

Go USA and The Netherlands!                                                           Lisa Fairbrother    July 1st 2014 The World Cup group stage has finished and although 3 of our teams made it through to the last 16 (Nigeria, The USA and The Netherlands), Nigeria’s defeat to France leaves us with just two teams left to support: the USA and the Netherlands (the English department’s adopted team because of their high TOEFL scores, remember). Even if the Netherlands don’t make it to the final, their fans definitely deserve their own World Cup for creative headwear! Check out these outfits! I particularly like the cow on the shoulder look in this one.    And the milkmaid look here.

  • England already a World Cup loser (3)

England were actually fighting two battles Lisa Fairbrother   June 24th 2014 Despite the hopes of everyone supporting them, England is now officially out of the World Cup. Even though they still have one match left to play against the leaders of Group D, Costa Rica, they have absolutely no chance of qualifying for the next stage. Although this is sad, before the tournament even began, the British press was already pretty sure that England would struggle to make it through the group stage. Why would they be so pessimistic about the chances of a team ranked 10th in the world? Why would they doubt a team that has consistently made it <続きを読む>
  • World Cup Rankings (2)

    2014/06/17
Which department’s teams have the best chance of winning the World Cup?   Lisa Fairbrother   June 17th 2014 The World Cup is now well underway and I’m sure a lot of people around the world are already missing a good few hours’ sleep! Based on the languages spoken in the countries represented at the World Cup, I thought it might be fun to compare the departments in the Faculty of Foreign Studies and look at each department’s chances of winning. Rather than paying attention to the FIFA rankings, football fans in the UK are more likely to trust the predictions of the bookmakers (the betting shops that set the odds of <続きを読む>
  • The World Cup Begins! (1)

    2014/06/09
Which football (soccer) teams should the English Department be supporting in the 2014 World Cup? I’m Lisa Fairbrother, Associate Professor in the Department of English Studies, and during the next month I’m going to be sharing my thoughts with you about this year’s World Cup. I’m sure some of you might be wondering why on earth I’ve been chosen as the blogger for the English Department but I assure you I have great credentials : ). Firstly, I like watching football (albeit from the comfort of my sofa at home) and, as I’m sure my husband will agree (with a sigh), I’m a very enthusiastic and vocal supporter. Secondly, I <続きを読む>

  • A Blog about Blogs

    2013/07/03
While watching the Olympics last summer I saw an interview with an American water polo player who said that he spent three hours every day exercising only the small muscles in his upper back and his shoulders. When questioned as to why he spent so much time targeting smaller muscle groups, he responded that he never knew what he was going to need in the pool. This immediately reminded me of a graduate school writing professor that would have us choose a random year from our lives and then make us list all of the things we remember. We had to do this every class. After a while, when we questioned the exercise, <続きを読む>
  • Why the Elderly Rule the Gym

    2013/06/30
Every time I visit my local gym in Minatomirai, I am both surprised and impressed by the number of elderly patrons swimming laps, taking yoga lessons, pumping iron, and generally taking care of their bodies through regular exercise. The blue-haired, tank-topped, spandexed sexagenarians at my gym are dynamos; they aerobicize, handle the weight machines like pros, and have forged a tight-knit community dedicated toward healthy living. But where are the gym rats of the younger generation? While I have observed a fair number of men in their 20s and 30s hitting the weights at my gym, the young female population is largely non-existent. In talking with one fitness trainer, I <続きを読む>
